Space made of nothing but relations
A spin network has no coordinates and no background. It is a graph whose edges carry a spin and whose vertices must satisfy one hard algebraic condition: the spins meeting there have to be able to cancel to nothing. Where that condition holds, the edges carry area and the vertices carry volume — and where it fails, there is no state at all, however good the picture looks.
The condition itself is not speculative. It is ordinary SU(2) representation theory, and because spins are stored here as 2j integers it is two integer comparisons. What is speculative is reading the result as geometry — that is loop quantum gravity, a research programme rather than confirmed physics, and every readout that depends on it is labelled as a model.
A combinatorial toy at the scale of a dozen vertices. What it demonstrates about the algebra is exact; what it demonstrates about spacetime is nothing.
