About this module
F-Theory Lab
Playable — sandboxF-Theory Lab is a research-oriented module for exploring how physical fields, particles, and symmetries can emerge from the geometry of higher-dimensional spaces.
What F-Theory Is
F-theory is a direction within string theory, proposed by Cumrun Vafa in 1996, that reformulates part of type IIB string theory geometrically. It uses elliptically fibered spaces to encode the varying axio-dilaton field of type IIB theory. Put simply: physics is treated as a consequence of hidden geometry — particles, forces, and symmetries emerge not as separate ingredients but as expressions of the shape, structure, and singularities of a higher-dimensional space.
F-theory is often described as a 12-dimensional construction, but the two extra dimensions are not ordinary spatial directions a spacecraft could travel through. They are a geometric bookkeeping device — a way of encoding the complex axio-dilaton field as the shape of an elliptic fiber over every point of a lower-dimensional base. Degenerations of that fiber are where new symmetries and gauge groups appear; compactifying the resulting Calabi–Yau geometry down to observable dimensions is what connects this abstract construction to low-energy physics.
Planned Game Loop
- 01The player receives an initial geometry.
- 02The player changes the base, fiber, parameters, singularities, and connections.
- 03The simulator computes the resulting physical consequences.
- 04An AI assistant explains what happened.
- 05A validator checks mathematical consistency.
- 06The best solutions are saved as reproducible experiments.
Core Objects
| Object | Meaning in F-theory | Game interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Base | The space over which the fiber is built | The game map — the geometric foundation the player shapes |
| Elliptic fiber | A torus, or elliptic curve, sitting over every point of the base | The hidden layer of space attached to each point |
| Singularity | A degeneration of the fiber | A special zone where new symmetries can appear |
| 7-brane | An object associated with fiber degenerations | A force node or defect anchored in the geometry |
| Calabi–Yau manifold | The compact geometry of the extra dimensions | The hidden shape of the universe being explored |
| Gauge group | The symmetry of the resulting physical model | The set of forces the configuration allows |
